PETA held a publicity event on Steven Avenue, waving at cars going down 3rd Street SW, in downtown Calgary on December 14, 2011. The orignal plan was to have three nearly naked women appear with body painting as a leopard, cow, and snake. Due to the weather there were just two (the cow is off camera, and the snake did not come). The leopard, seen here, wasn't outside when I came, but came out so I could get a picture.

From the quick look I had, the Occupy Calgary at Olympic Plaza did pretty well. I didn't see any obvious damage from the wind. The tents, as you can see, are standing. Although, I'm sure they must have some difficulties. I did have a slightly unpleasant circumstance, since one lady was complaining about pictures being taken by me. She didn't bother saying anything to me directly, and another person said people are free to take pictures. No big deal. Just a bit annoying, when people demonstrate in public to get attention, but don't like the attention (again, this was just one person, so nothing relevant to the group as a whole).

I visited Downtown Calgary on Saturday, October 15, 2011 to get some pictures of the "Occupy Calgary" gathering which is part of the movement that started with "Occupy Wall Street". I was happy to find that on the same day there was a Zombie Walk that was also downtown. So, I got some pics from both. From all I saw, both events were pretty peaceful. The Zombies won't be back till next year. The Occupy Calgary are trying to maintain an ongoing action, with some protesters camped out on St. Patrick's Island.

Grant Neufeld is one of the more well known activists in Calgary for some time. So, it wasn't surprising to seem him here. It was generally hard to get photos, because of how everyone was gathered around in a circle, so that all I could get was people's backs. So, I had to wait for a head turn.

Watching Over Us

As usual the police were taking photographs of everyone attending the protest. There's a list of causes, that if you are associated with, they will maintain a database on you. They'll release a bit to people who file a Freedom of Information and Privacy Request. But, most of what they collect, which is mainly innocent people, they won't disclose. They'll then share this with police agencies inside and outside Canada.

This is a picture the police took at an event I was photographing. I recently filed a FOIP (Freedom Of Information and Privacy) Request to find out what information the Calgary Police Service have on me, mainly related to a case of brutality which I shot pictures of, which they destroyed, as part of a coverup in July 2009.
