Protest at Chinese Consulate

Protest at Chinese Consulate
After leaving the Lilac Festival, I was walking downtown and happened upon a protest march by the Vietnamese Canadian community in Calgary, specifically against recent acts by China, but also there was an expression of opposition against the communist government of Vietnam, which is why you see the flag that was flown by South Vietnam. The protesters marched through the streets downtown (travelling several blocks) until they arrived at the Chinese Consulate. I'm not sure how many there were, but it was in the hundreds.

Islamic Gathering at Olympic Plaza

Islamic Gathering at Olympic Plaza
A group of Muslims gathered at Olympic Plaza in downtown Calgary on Saturday, November 9, 2013. One of the attendees started to explain what the gathering was about. I was expecting he was going to talk about recent events (assuming this was a run of the mill political protest of some sort). He told me about the Battle of Karbala (in 680 CE) and Husayn ibn Ali, who is held in high esteem as a martyr by Shia Muslims. Although I was interested, I didn't get into a real discussion, since talking religion with a stranger can risk causing unintended offense. Everyone at the event was quite friendly. Free water and snacks were offered to everyone (whether they were apart of the group or were just passing by).

Seeing things from the other side

One of the protesters was arrested by police. The crowd followed them, until they got near the police station, and at a "sidewalk closed" sign (due to construction). People were told to stay back. I couldn't shoot the protesters from in front of them, but I noticed I got a shot of front of the protesters in the police officer's sunglasses, which I thought was neat.

Arrest Leads the March

Arrest Leads the March
While at the Harry Hays Building (federal government offices) protesters were told to stay off the plaza area, because it was "private property". The person seen her being taken by police came back there at the end of the protest, and was arrested. However, I don't have the details of what if anything he was charged with. I think I heard him say they said there was a warrant on him.

Anniversary of Syrian Uprising

Anniversary of Syrian Uprising
This was taken on Saturday, March 17, 2012 outside City Hall in downtown Calgary. Protesters seeking an end to the Assad regime have been gathering here weekly since the uprising in Syria began a year ago. This was an extra large gathering, which included a signficant number of Lebanese Canadians, as well as other non-Syrians.

Calling for freedom in Tibet

Calling for freedom in Tibet
On March 10, 2012 people protested around the world to mark the anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan uprising. In Calgary protesters gathered outside the Chinese Consulate, after marching from Olympic Plaza (I missed that part). There was a good turnout, so that the side walk was to crowded to walk along, and I had to take almost all my shots across the street.
