Please don’t hurt me

This part of some sort of game played on a grid drawn on the ground. There seemed to be some sort of rules, but it also seemed that rules were made up as they went along.

Keeping the Bow Safe

It was a warm day. So, the Calgary Police were out patrolling the Bow River, mainly to look for rafters behaving dangerously.

Busking Violin on Steven

It was a nice weather day, so naturally there was some busking activity on Steven Avenue Mall.

A friendly cop

This picture is a little misleading by showing the officer seeming to relax, since, along with many others, he had a difficult and challenging job of managing a lot of frustrated motorists along the parade route. Unfortunately parade organizers and the City have done a really terrible job in managing this event for years.

Colour and a sword

This is one of the pictures I took of the annual Nagar Kirtan parade on Saturday, May 12, 2012 in Calgary. This is a religious event of the Sikh community. It started and ended at the Dashmesh Culture Centre.

I hoped to get a lot of photos, but didn't get much. A positive event turned sour for me, when a parade volunteer approached me on the public sidewalk, and informed that that I was *required* to wear a head covering, had absolutely no choice, and it was a religious obligation that all must adhere to. I informed her that I would not. I feel strongly that my right to not wear a religious symbol is equal to someone else's right to wear such a symbol. For example, I think a Sikh man has every right to wear a turban anywhere in public, and nobody can ask them to remove it, even if it violates somebody else religion or culture.

Holding the Cross in Calgary

This was taken during the Stations of the Cross procession held on Good Friday, April 6, 2012 in the Mission and Beltline communities of Calgary, starting and ending at St. Mary's Cathedral. This is one of a number of people who helped carry the cross for a period of time.

This was taken during the Stations of the Cross procession held on Good Friday, April 6, 2012. The procession had stopped outside the Sheldon Chumir Health Centre, which was on of the Stations. These are two of around two thousand people attending the event.

On April 1, 2012 Green Fools Theatre put on a April's Fool Parade starting in Tomkins Park and running along 17 Avenue SW in Calgary. The public was welcomed to join and put silly hats and costumes, many of which were provided.

Egypt and Canadian Flags Join Syrian

This is the weekly Saturday protest against the Syrian government continues. I'm guessing this has to be longest run weekly protest campaign the city has ever had, since it's been over a year.

Supporting the Cause

Protesters were marching back to City Hall, and on the way passed this man, who asked what it was about. He said he was down with it and asked for his photo to be taken.

Seeing things from the other side

One of the protesters was arrested by police. The crowd followed them, until they got near the police station, and at a "sidewalk closed" sign (due to construction). People were told to stay back. I couldn't shoot the protesters from in front of them, but I noticed I got a shot of front of the protesters in the police officer's sunglasses, which I thought was neat.

Arrest Leads the March

While at the Harry Hays Building (federal government offices) protesters were told to stay off the plaza area, because it was "private property". The person seen her being taken by police came back there at the end of the protest, and was arrested. However, I don't have the details of what if anything he was charged with. I think I heard him say they said there was a warrant on him.
