The Calgary Police had a substantial presence. They mainly watched and took lots of pictures. There were a few arrests, but not many, and relations between police and demonstrators remained civil throughout.

While the primary focus was obviously on marijuana, Heather Anderson (left) was introduced to the crowd by Keith Fagin, Calgary 420 leader, to speak about cruelty to animals, and her group "DAISY", which stands for "Deligates for Inhuman Animal Suffering Y?". This is outside of Calgary City Hall.

In the foreground a labour group, carrying wreaths, marked theInternational Day of Mourning Workers Killed or Injured on the Job. They marched in a funeral-like procession from the Alberta Workers Compensation Board offices, along Macleod Trail (seen here), to the City of Calgary Workers' Memorial, which is located at Edwards Place Park, on the SW corner of City Hall. It was organized in part by the Calgary and District Labour Council.

Tamils wave the Canadian flag

Tamils wave the Canadian flag
Tamil Canadians gathered outside the U.S. consulate in downtown Calgary to call on the U.S. to help Tamils in Sri Lanka. Demonstrators expressed support for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, better known as the "Tamil Tigers", who are designated as a terrorist organization by the Canadian government. The Tamil protesters want that status ended, and want the world to pressure Sri Lanka to accept a cease fire with the Tigers.

Waving the flag of the Tamil Tigers

Waving the flag of the Tamil Tigers
A large portion of the protesters flew the Tamil Tigers emblem, featuring a tiger on top of bayoneted rifles, and a ring of bullets. I'm not sure if anybody the noticed the irony of flying a flag, featuring bayonet-tipped rifles, behind a tiger, while decrying the effects of war.

PETA protest on Stephen Avenue

PETA protest on Stephen Avenue
PETA protesters "dressed" as seals and "played dead" along Stephen Avenue Mall in downtown Calgary. They're trying to make a link between the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver with Canada's seal hunt. Of course VANOC has nothing to do with the seal hunt
