Judy Gabriel is a host and producer based in Calgary, who works on TV, radio, and film productions.
Early life
Gabriel was born in Ethiopia. They escaped the civil war in Ethiopia and ended up refugees in Nairobi Kenya. Her family ultimately migrated to Canada. They settled in Calgary, where Gabriel went to school.
Career
In 1999 Gabriel joined A-Channel in Calgary to become a Producer and Writer, and then later an anchor and reporter in 1999 until 2002. From 2002 to 2003 she was a Producer and Host of the Morning Show at KISS 969 radio (CKIS-FM) in Calgary. She served as Producer and Host at Pyramid Productions from 2005 to 2007. Citytv in Calgary hired Gabriel in 2007 to be Senior Producer, Entertainment Anchor, and Reporter. She later became a Host at Citytv, which lasted until 2011. From 2019 she was the Senior News Producer at Stringray Television. In 2012 she founded HotBizMedia Inc. As Executive Producer, she made content for TV and the web, producing marketing content as well as documentaries.
Health
In 2020, she was diagnosed with bronchitis, then pneumonia and eventually COVID-19. She became seriously ill, spending five days in the ICU. She told the CBC that her case wasn’t taken seriously at first, until a retired physician, Dr. Raffath Sayeed, reached out to her, to insist she call 911 and demand she be hospitalized, which she did. She said she felt like she always died from the condition.
