I took this at Olympic Plaza in downtown Calgary on Friday, December 9, 2011. I came a couple hours in advance of the 2pm deadline for Occupy Calgary campers to leave. To my surprise, the tents were gone. Protesters left behind a signs with short messages. They also left this sculpture.
Even though this was the first day it was present, it looks like it belongs, and is a permanent part of the park, which the protesters hope it will be. So far, there’s no word on what the city will do with it. I’m fascinated about where it came from, who built it, how it was brought in, how it was set up, and how much it cost. Apparently, protesters set it up in the night, making it a surprise for reporters coming in the morning.
